You'd hope they wouldn't do that. It would be suicide.

I'd pay for premium features or even a small yearly fee a la Flickr. I'd be very surprised if they started charging normal users for access.

Reminds me of how livejournal works as well. You use livejournal at a basic level where you can do some customization to your blog and have a few user pictures. Then, eventually perhaps you would like to use your own CSS and images and what not. There are no limits to the posts per day to the blog so basic users are not affected by this (they get to post as much, too!). Then, you get to add RSS feeds to your friend page and more user pics to your account. I like it especially as an RSS reader, especially since people can comment on the one you put up (basic users are allowed to friend the feed once it's created) and makes for interesting discussions. :) Basic has ads, or used to, from what I remember. I don't think it does anymore.

I use livejournal for posting thoughts (which is why you have a friends only section -- which all of my journal is and special securties for certain groups or users can see what posts. I really like it for discussions on varying topics in life.

Although the model I see working is that you can use the service for free, but don't get extra goodies. I would totally go for about $20/yr or $25/yr and I think they would make good money for those that are very involved with their network. I would not mind paying.

While I'm generally opposed to having to pay for Twitter, I do highly value the network I've created, so a $25/year fee is one that I might be willing to pay. I can't imagine paying a monthly fee, however, and I suspect that many others feel the same way.

If Twitter went with a pay-to-play model I imagine they'd use a lot of users and that similar services like Identi.ca or Plurk would suddenly find themselves gaining a huge number of users overnight.
