I love the idea, and I don’t want to knock it, but I can’t see it happening to any great degree. What I really wish is that manufacturers would start out making quality products in the first place so that we wouldn’t have to make these kinds of repairs.

It would be nice to buy products that don’t have built-in obsolescence. I think it needs to be legislated that manufacturers make products built to last. It’s unfortunate our economy is so focused on producing something that will be landfill after a predetermined amount of time.

Just one example: refrigerators. I go to the appliance stores and they tell me they have a five year warranty, if you’re lucky. I guess they figure I only need my fridge to last five years. I’m sure the fridge that came with my house has to be 25 years old. I expect major appliances to last that long. We’re not capable of manufacturing products to that quality level anymore?

I plan to buy a new fridge soon and want one that will last. It’s not a fashion item. I’m not going to change the colour of it any time soon. I’m willing to pay a little more for something that will last me another 25 years. That goes for my stove, dishwasher as well as my washer and dryer.

So, you focus on the backend, and we need someone to focus on the frontend. Hopefully we’ll reduce the landfill by the time we meet in the middle.

It’s an admirable goal to want to repair everything, but some crap out there just is not worth fixing. It wasn’t worth buying in the first place.
